Almost all of us make our beds as soon as we wake up in the morning, not knowing that millions of dust mites are left trapped in the sheets. These dust mites live in our bed and feed off the dead skin cells and the sweat we leave on the sheets. Not only that this sounds disgusting, they are a potential threat to our health, causing allergies and asthma.
If we leave the bed unmade, the dust mites will be left exposed to fresh air and sunlight which will dehydrate and kill them immediately.
According to medical experts, an average adult sweat up to a liter of fluid per night. This creates the perfect environment for the dust mites to breed and live in. An average bed contains about 1.5 million dust mites. It`s not them that are causing harm, it`s the waste they leave behind. When inhaled, it can cause asthma and allergies.
Carolyn Forte, the main director or cleaning lab at the “Good Housekeeping Institute”, explains that it is recommended that you leave the bed unmade for a couple of hours after getting up in the morning. This will allow the sheets to dry, so that the dust mites won`t be able to thrive.
If you don`t have the time, at least leave the bed until you have your breakfast and get ready for work. Also, change and wash the sheets once a week, as well as the pillow cases. The best thing is to leave the bed unmade the whole day, make it when you return home.
Exposing the dust mites to fresh air and sunlight during the entire day will dehydrate and kill them, because they live in dark and moist places. This will make your bed and bedroom a better sleeping place, where you can easily breathe.
